WARD's from Grimsby to Peterborough, Canada

Hi, I'm researching my family history and the Ward surname features.

My Grandmother was born Nellie Ward in Grimsby 1924

Her parents William Nicholson and Florence Ward.

William was born in 1882, I believe in Caistor.

William lost both parents; his father George Ward died in January 1911 and his mother Charlotte Nicholson died in March 1910.

The family resided in Grimsby.

Elder sister Ada, the only child of John Henry Ward and Charlotte Nicholson, looked after the children, George Ward - Henrietta or ‘Hetty’, George Jr, William, Robert, John, Tom & Charles.

We believe John & George may have been brothers or some other relation - John likely died and Charlotte re-married to George is the most likely scenario.

At some point in time, Tom was sent to Canada - possibly as a 'Home Child'.

Charlie emigrated to Canada in 1929. He settled in Peterborough where he raised a family with Edith who was also from England, South Shields maybe.

WARD's from Leeds to Australia

My Grandmother was Adelaide Ward born 1899 in York.
Her mother was Annie Drury (born in Leeds 1874.)
Annie married George Ward (born in 1868 Leeds) 26 Nov 1898

Annie came to Australia with husband George Ward and daughter Adelaide departing London to Sydney 15 May 1908 on Orient royal mail ship 'oroya'? They moved to Adelaide South Australia.
Family rumour says that Annie commited suicide (or was murdered) in 1916 she died in bed in a house fire after her clothes ignited from a dripping candle.

Her husband George Ward was deported soon after.

In the 1891 cencus Annie aged 17 Tailoress living at 42 14th Ave Wortley Leeds with parents Tom and Sarah Drury and siblings, Walter 19 railway porter, lilly aged 15 tailoress, Florence aged 10, Tom aged 7 and Adelaide aged 3.

1901 cencus Annie living at 13 Clifford St Leeds with daughter Adelaide

George Ward is a real enigma.

His birth was not registered until 30 Aug 1882 when he was 14 years old.

His father was John Ward born 1842 and his mother was Elizabeth Hobman Born 1845
1871 cencus living at Millgate

WARD's from Rothwell, Northamptonshire

I have been tying to find any links to the Ward family that ended up in Rothwell, Northamptonshire.

Many of my links are now sadly passing away and I have less people to ask.

The ones still here are hopeful that I find out as much as I can so they can learn where they came from.

I'll start as far back as I know.
David WARD b1801 I think in the Lincolnshire area married Sarah b1798 Osgoby, Lincolnshire.
They had 4 children

  • David Watham WARD
  • William WARD
  • Amos WARD
  • John WARD

David Watham WARD b1830 Raithby, Lincolnshire married Elizabeth HILL b1834 Burgh, Lincolnshire.
They had 5 children

  • Sarah A WARD
  • Charlotte WARD
  • Amos WARD
  • David WARD
  • William Hill WARD

(My line follows on from William Hill WARD but I also have info on the line from Charlotte if anyone finds a link and would like to know.)
William Hill WARD b1854 Donnington, Lincolnshire married Sarah CROSS b1850 Rushton, Northamptonshire.
They had 9 children

  • Lucy Ann WARD
  • James William WARD
  • Laura Louise WARD
  • Eliza Gertrude WARD
  • Charlotte E WARD
  • George WARD
  • Martha Annie WARD
  • Ethel WARD
  • Laura E C WARD

My Great Grandmother was Martha Annie WARD b1888 d1970.  She was in Rothwell, Northamptonshire all her life.

This is where we then lose the WARD surname in our line but I have the information of her marriage and children should anyone be interested.

If you could post this I would be most grateful.

WARD's from Swinton, Rotherham

I'm desperately trying to find out about the Ward family in Swinton who set up Ward and Sons (Swinton) Ltd bottling plant.

I know it was started by William Ward in 1874 but I can't find him in any census records.

Any help would be very gratefully received.

I'm interested as my grandfather, Joseph Firth (1913-2005), managed the plant in its later days and his mother was one of the Ward family.

It's family legend that the business was passed on to William Ward's nephew rather than his daughter

(I believe he had no sons) and therefore didn't come down my line of the family! I have lots of old photographs of the works and the staff there if anyone is interested.

WARD's from Rotherham

I am trying to find information about my GGF, William Henry WARD.

William was born in Masbrough, Rotherham, circa 1837-1839.

His wife Sarah Elizabeth HARRISON was born in Tipton, Staffs, 1835, daughter of Edward Harrison who was born 1841 in Tipton, Staffs and was found in the 1861 census living at Henley Grove, Kimberworth, Sarah Elizabeth being 26 years old, with her brothers & sisters Emma, Samuel, Theodore, Edward, Benjamin, Thomas & Eliza.

Due to my elusive GGF, I employed the services of a company to help find him.

The result being that he could not be found on the 1861 census.

William and Sarah Elizabeth were found on the following census.

1891 census at 25 Midland Road, Kimberworth.

1881 census at 17 Wortley Road, Kimberworth.

1871 census at 9 New Zealand Yard, Bridgegate.

The only William Ward found on the 1861 census, at the right age of 22, is with his wife Hannah, also 22 who is listed as born in Dronfield

This is ref 3503/49B living at Oil Mill Fold.

I am hoping this is my GGF who may have married again.

Does anyone know this William and Hannah, and is there a possible link????????

I think Hannah's maiden name may be Wigley.

WARD's from Rotherham

My research includes Jim WARD, son of Edward WARD & Jane Emily SCOPES.

Jim was born 1906 and married someone called Alice.

Jim signed on at Silverwood colliery on July 19th 1922 aged 16 and is listed as living at 33 Abell Street, Thrybergh.
I think this is my father's brother.

Family sources say that at sometime, Jim lost either one, or both of his legs and lived in the Dinnington area of Rotherham, UK.

WARD's from Grimsby, Caistor, Canada

Hi

I'm researching my family history and the Ward name features.

My Grandmother was born Nellie Ward in Grimsby 1924.

Her parents were William Nicholson and Florence Ward.

William was born in 1882, I believe in Caistor.

William lost both parents: his father George Ward a labourer to pneumonia in January 1911 and his mother Charlotte Nicholson to cancer in March 1910.

The family resided in Grimsby.

Elder sister Ada, the only child of John Henry Ward and Charlotte Nicholson, looked after the children, George Ward, Henrietta or "Hetty", George Jr, William, Robert, John, Thomas & Charles.

We believe John & George may have been brothers or some other relation.

John likely died and Charlotte re-married to George is the best likely scenario.

At some point in time, Tom was sent to Canada - possibly as a 'Home Child'.

Charlie emigrated to Canada in 1929.

He settled in Peterborough where he raised a family with Edith (who was also from England – South Shields maybe).

If anyone has more info on this family line, then I'd love to hear from you.
